The Navy Lark

The eagerly awaited visit of Gisborne's adopted ship, H.M.N.Z.S. Blackpool, took place from 8th to 13th September. A charter granting freedom of the city, various entertainments and a day at sea were highlights of the visit.

Presentation of 1000 books for ship's library, the collection of which was organised by Greater Gisborne Inc., was made at P.R.O. With a few of the books are John Burland, Maurice McIntyre, president Jack Howard, Captain Quinn, Sub-Lt. John Greenwood and Lt/Com. Michael Waymouth.

A real kick for 84-year-old Bill Harrison as he is piped aboard Blackpool. An old sea-dog who joined the British Navy in 1895, he is also a Boer War veteran.

Entertainment for the visitors included a welcome at Poho-o-rawiri by the Waihirere Maori Concert Party and reciprocal items by the ship's haka and action song party.

The Overseas League entertained the Captain and Officers at a cocktail party where Lt/C Neville Hutcherson talks to Mr and Mrs Doug Caldwell.
