In the eight years since he took up indoor bowling 25-year-old Arnold Hutchins of 21 Bayly Street has become one of the leading figures in the sport in Gisborne. Rated as one of the top singles players in the district, he is the only player to win the singles title twice - the first as a fledgling player of 19 years in 1961, then again in 1965.

Various other highlights in his short but impressive bowling term include a championship pairs with Mrs Molly Ashwell, other championship runners-up and, this season, the Tattersall and Bayly Cup for men's singles, an event staged by the Poverty Bay-East Coast Bowling Centre. Holding the cup Arnold is shown with some of the many medals and trophies he has won over, his playing career.

First playing at the Ormond and Waerenga-a-hika clubs before moving into town where he joined the now defunct Aero Club Bowling Club, Arnold now belongs to the Mangapapa Club.

And the biggest thrill of his bowling career? His defeat of New Zealand singles champion Trevor Burr while representing Poverty Bay in a challenge for the Welche Trophy at Hamilton in 1965.
