Computer Accounting Comes to Gisborne

What's New in Industry

A Gisborne firm of public accountants is showing the way locally to the future methods of book-keeping by installing an Addo automatic data processing unit.

Operated similarly to a normal accounting machine, it records all the account details on punch tape. These are sent to a data processing centre in Wellington, where the master computor reads the tape and prints the account forms ready for delivery.

Versatility, speed, and accuracy are features of the machine. It is able to handle a wide variety of tasks, and with a skilled operator, its output is up to seven times greater than that of a conventional accounting machine.

Responsible for the installation of the Addo was Allan Moore, a technician with Eric Upton and Sons Ltd, who has attended computor and electronics training courses in Auckland. He is pictured above making final adjustments to the tape punching unit. This is connected electronically to the keyboard machine at right.
