Mrs L. Read

People and Their Hobbies

A visit to the home of Mrs Lily Read at Motu only serves to emphasise how varied life in the backblocks can be made. In addition to her interest in cattle breeding, and the work of running a farm and milking 30 cows, Mrs Read is an expert in a dozen hobbies including pottery, shell-work, soft toys, necklaces, knitting, crochet, tatting, music, drama, and floral art. There seems no limit to her self-taught interests which include considerable prowess as a pianist.

On this page we show Mrs Read at the potter's wheel which she built herself, and at right two of her toys and some of the many hundreds of pieces of pottery she has made on her wheel and fired in her own kiln. Below is a small selection from her collection of home-made ornaments.
