Sea Threatens Homes At Wainui

×

When southerly storms whipped up heavy seas last month, a serious threat developed to a number of homes at Wainui Beach. At a point about half way between Grey's Store and the Okitu Store, the sea began to erode the foreshore to a point where fences and front lawns began to disappear. Daylight on July 23 revealed at least one house overhanging space (picture above, by Dunstans Photo Service). On that day the house was moved back to safety, but in a damaged condition.

July 23 was a Sunday, and an appeal organised by Mr. R. A. Keeling, M.P., brought out about 200 volunteers, some of whom are seen at left improvising temporary protective works.

Throughout the day, in sunshine and intermittent showers, men worked with a will, procuring materials and erecting a double row of willow fascines on the beach, fronted by concrete cylinders.
