Big Slips(continued)
Slip left this enormous cliff at top of hillside, below which a small lake was formed. Acres of country near this point were riven by deep crevasses.
Broken road here disappears below tons of earth. Over whole quartermile only a few short sections of road, looking like crazy pavement, were to be found after slip came down.
Looking down from Gisborne end of slip into the Waimata, on morning after. Huge accumulation of earth travelled right across river here, forming a dam. River backed up and flooded flats in distance, but weight of water soon cut new channel.

Approximately 2500 tons of spoil came down on the main north highway at Makarori as a result of the heavy rains, and is here being cleared by draglines.
At the Waimata slip, P. and T. workmen had an arduous task restoring lines in the devastated area.
Mr. D. Sargent and his new Studebaker taxi. Mr. Sargent had a narrow escape when in the dark he drove on to the affected portion of Riverside Road as it was slipping downhill. He had to back hurriedly uphill to safety on a section of road, he had just climbed in. forward gear.
Trouble also developed in Gisborne city when this section of the Esplanade began moving into the Waimata River.
