Pictures from the Past

Reminders of the difficulties of travel up the East Coast are given by these two pictures from Mr Ledger's collection. In the coaching days depicted, drivers had to take to the beaches to get up to Tolaga Bay. The picture above shows the coach negotiating a bad stretch above Tatapouri, with the horses almost submerged in a raging sea. Figures on coach beside driver are reputed to be Detective McLeod and a prisoner in his custody.
