Railway Line Closed By Slip

A massive 6000 cubic yard slip crossed the Gisborne to Wairoa railway line near Beach Loop, about 30 miles south of Gisborne, following a period of heavy rain last month.

A team of eight bulldozers and two draglines worked from both ends for five days until the slip was cleared sufficiently to enable a temporary track to be installed around the blockage.

The line was opened for a short period before being closed again for a further two days to enable the team to finish its job.
