H.B. Slaughter P.B.

The Poverty Bay Rugby team crumbled under the onslaught of the powerful Hawkes Bay side when they met for the feature match of the P.B. Union's 75th jubilee celebrations.

The game was the biggest scoring spree witnessed in first-class rugby on the park, and was also the greatest defeat suffered by a Poverty Bay team.

At the final whistle, there were 72 points on the board, 58 of them in favour of the black and whites.

Although the game was a disappointing one for local supporters, it was definitely a crowd-pleaser, with both teams playing open and entertaining rugby.

Typical of the play is this picture, showing a tide of black and white jerseys sweeping up the field as last-line defender Muru Walters races across in a vain attempt to prevent prop forward Neil Thimbleby from scoring.
