A phenomenal cloud-burst over Makaraka last month resulted in minor damage to the area, particularly in Ancell's Four Square Store, where water poured into the building damaging stock to the extent of more than £100. The density of the rain was such that the Makaraka Hotel across the road from the store was completely obscured. The storm water was quickly swept from the shop by smiling staff Beth Sharp and Cyril Crockford, with encouragement from behind the counter supplied by Ross Kirkland.

Staff Sergeant John Baird, Manuka Street, who has been transferred to 1 Battalion training depot at Burnham Military Camp after six years' service as cadre N.C.O. in Wairoa and Gisborne, was farewelled at a function in the Gisborne Garrison Club recently. His wife, Mrs Jolene Baird, has been a prominent pianist in the district during her stay, and has been associated with several Christmas pantomines. Mr and Mrs Baird are pictured being presented with a farewell gift by Major C. Campbell (left), commanding officer of A Coy, 7 R.N.Z.I.R.
