Gisborne's New Broadcasting Station
In their efforts to provide the Gisborne radio listening public with a greater variety of entertainment, the N.Z.B.C. recently commenced broadcasts from a new non-commercial station..... Station 2YW, which transmits from 7 to 10.30 p.m. nightly.
Tuning in at 1180 kilocycles, 2YW is operated from Station 2XG's studios in Peel Street, and is manned by the same staff.
Using a former 2XG auxiliary control room, converted to a combined announcing and control studio, the new station is considered a temporary measure until the installation of a repeater unit, on Mahia Peninsula, for similar programmes from Napier.
Although employing only a 190 watt transmitter, in comparison with 2XG's 2 kilowatt one, 2YW has had reception reports from Invercargill.
"This is Station 2YW commencing transmission"......Opening announcer-operator Tony Chevis busy at his controls and microphone in the converted studio.
Jack Roderick selects a disc for the new station, while other programme staff, Walter Te Ua and John Rayner, choose a 2XG selection.
