Anniversary Of First N.Z. Landing

Approximately 1400 children from city and country schools, along with members of the public, gathered at Kaiti Beach on the 8th October, at the spot where Captain James Cook made his first landing in New Zealand, to attend the 194th anniversary celebration of the event.

Grouped in front of the Cook Manorial, the audience listened to speeches by Mr J. T. Hill, chairman of the. Gisborne-East Coast regional committee of the Historic Places Trust, the Mayor, Mr H. H. Barker, and Lieutenant-Commander D. H. Davies, of the R.N.Z.N.

A detachment of men from the navy's fishery protection vessels Paea, Mako, and Manga, paraded at the ceremony.
