The freezing hulk, the Prince of Wales, in which the first meat was frozen in Gisborne in, 1889. According to Mr S. Ledger, who provided this photograph, the ship was built for the search for Sir John Franklin. Converted to a freezer, it has a capacity of 10,000 carcases, which were frozen on board before being transferred to a mutton "Home" boat in the bay. In the background may be seen the small island off the Kaiti foreshore, which disappeared when stone was taken from there to help build the present breakwater.

The Masonic Hotel in 1886, on the present site. This was the second Masonic Hotel, the first having been burned down. It was here that election results were always displayed in the early days. The hotel shown here was eventually pulled down to make way for the present premises.
