Boy From Gisborne Now A Millionaire

A boy who went to Central School in Derby Street, Gisborne, and who has since made a fortune in insurance, is relatively little-known in his home town.

He is Noble Lowndes, who heads the Empire-wide Noble Lowndes Pension Service and associated companies, employing 1500 people.

All the Lowndes boys went to Central School, and Roy and Colin also attended Gisborne High School. They are associated with their older brother in the business. Roy was in New Zealand recently, organising a branch of the business in this country.

Frank Lowndes, their father, was a retired master mariner who ran a cartage business here, and Noble began his business career with this. After his World War I service (he spent his 18th birthday in Apia helping to take Samoa from the Germans), he returned to Gisborne, but left soon to go into insurance in Auckland. He was in Australia next, with the M.L.C., and in 1930 went to London ae manager there for the company. Then he decided to break into the business on his own account, with a young Aussie for a partner. They have never looked back.
