Since the installation of parking meters in Gisborne's central area, the back streets have become heavily congested with parked vehicles, many of which remain unused throughout the day. To help ease this problem, the Transport Department has encouraged central landowners to develop parking lots. One such lot is the Okitu Dairy Factory's area on the corner of Lowe and Kahutia Streets, which haa remained unoccupied regardless of the heavy concentration of parked cars in the streets surrounding it.

A good start has been made on the reconstruction of the Wharerata section of Gisborne's south highway, and from first appearances, it seems to be a gigantic undertaking. Typical of the work is this scene, where a deep ravine has been filled to enable the new road to pass across it, from the right foreground of the picture to the left background.
