In the local body elections in Gisborne last month, the sitting Mayor, Mr H. H. Barker (above), was re-elected with the narrow majority of 32 votes over his opponent, Mr J. B. Williams (below), and now enters his 5th term of office.

Selling health stamps on the opening day of the 1962 campaign in the foyer of the Gisborne Post Office were two Cook Hospital student nurses, L. B. Kirkham and J. P. Elers.

A memorial gift of £70,000, to be used to construct a new public library building, has been given by the family of the late Mr H. B. Williams, to commemorate his many years of close relationship with Gisborne city and district.

To help encourage the recent national savings week campaign, the entrance to the Post Office Savings Bank displayed a selection of household appliances and placards. Pictured looking at the fridges, washing machines, ovens, and radiograms, are three members of the savings bank's staff.
