Pictures from the Past

We have been asked to arrange for the publication of a series of pictures illustrating earlier days in Gisborne, and so we approached Mr S. L. Ledger, who kindly made his collection available for publication.

Gisborne's first freezing works were 2½ miles up the Taraheru River, a little below the Nelson bridge. Built in 1889, the works were demolished in the 1920's. This photograph was taken in 1895.

This scene taken in Gladstone Road in 1901 shows the Queen Victoria Memorial service in progress. At right is the Theatre Royal, Gisborne's first theatre, now the Kings Theatre. The prominent building in the centre of the picture has been replaced now by the A. M. P. building. The tower at left was built for the 1897 jubilee of Queen Victoria. It was moved from its site on the Bright Street corner into Gladstone Road for this occasion and is now to be found behind the local fire station.
