Head-on Collision

A passenger in the car at left was killed and both drivers seriously injured when the cars pictured on this page met in a head-on collision on the Stoke-Richmond highway, on the Nelson side of the freezing works, last month. As can be seen from the two pictures, the cars were extensively damaged. The front of the Vauxhall car (above) was concertinaed so badly that from the side the bonnet appears to commence just below the windscreen. Its driver, Mr James Campbell, of 4 Coleman Street, Richmond, suffered severe lacerations and concussion and was admitted to the Nelson Hospital in a serious condition. At the time of going to press, however, his condition had improved. The driver of the second vehicle, a pre-war Chevrolet, was Michael Archer, of 7 Browning Crescent, Stoke, He also suffered lacerations and concussion but has since been discharged from hospital. The passenger who was killed was Leslie Berry, aged 17, of 21 Keets Crescent, Nelson.

Since the vehicles were taken to the yard of the Nelson Police Station, hundreds of persons have viewed the wrecks and marvelled that anybody could have survived the collision.
