The End of an Era

×

For the first time in 95 years, Sacred Heart College, Nelson, will have no boarders when it reopens next year. Nor will it be able to accept sixth form pupils - those in their lower sixth certificate and university entrance years. A number of factors, but principally finance and staff shortages, have forced the boarding section and sixth form closures. The college, run by the Sisters of Our Lady of the Missions, opened in 1871, and boarders were accepted two years later. The closures will allow the order the space to establish a new arts room and a new library. The building, of three storeys (front) and four (back) and an attic, is the largest wooden building in Nelson and possibly the highest wooden building in New Zealand. The convent will celebrate its centenary in 1971.
