Nelsonians in Vietnam

Three Nelsonians serving in Vietnam distinguished themselves recently during operations against the Vietcong, and two of them were decorated for gallantry. Captain Anthony Howell (top left) was awarded the Military Cross for action against the Vietcong earlier this year. Captain Howell was living in Nelson before disembarking for Vietnam. Major John Mace (above). garlanded in flowers upon his arrival in Vietnam, was awarded an M. B. E. (Military) for his leadership and ability in Vietnam. Major Mace attended Nelson College in 1949 and his mother, Mrs E. H. Mace, lives in Nelson. From Pte H. Roberts, in Vietnam, comes this pic (below) of Donald Shand, cleaning up after an operation against the enemy. Don is a son of Mr J. G. Roberts, 56 North Road, Nelson He is an old boy of Nelson College and is a member of the Regular Force.

Flying Officer Ken Wells, son of Captain and Mrs K. H. Wells, 31 Titoki Street, Stoke, was credited with having helped save the lives of his eight passengers, when he crashlanded his helicopter in a paddy field after being shot up by the enemy.
