The Southern Motorway

In the light of the tremendous development in the timber industry in the Nelson province, surely it is high time the No 11 District Roads Council had another look at its priorities for the district. The northern motorway outlet from Nelson city has been surveyed and all is ready for commencement of the work when finance becomes available But little or no work has been carried out on the southern outlet motorway although present and future developments indicate that this section of the motorway should be given a high priority. At the moment, the huge fleet of timber trucks transporting something like 1000 tons of logs each day from Golden Downs to Port Nelson have to pass through Richmond, and this position will be aggravated next year when the chip mill is established outside Richmond and a further 400 tons of chips are transported through the main shopping area. The situation is bad enough now, but in the future it is likely to become intolerable. Our pic above shows a laden truck passing through Richmond while in the background an empty truck is about to turn the corner on its way to reload.
