The Nelson Photo News

Roving Camera

The Vanguard Swimming Club ended its learn-to-swim campaign recently at the Nelson Intermediate School baths. At left, John Landells gives Billy Philips some pointers while Christopher and Linda Hocking (above) wait their turn for coaching. Keen spectators were Ann and Gret McCully (left).

Within the last 10 years, the military cadet training given pupils at secondary schools has disappeared from all but two secondary schools in the Nelson district. Motueka High, Murchison District High, and more recently Waimea College, have "banished" cadets from the school parade grounds. Only Nelson College and Tapawera District High School (which has an Air Training Corps Unit) continue the training. This pic then, of a parade on the front field of Nelson College, is now something of a rarity.
