All this talk of a sportsdrome and its site and a hotel-motel and its site (last month's "Photo News") prompted an acquaintance to draw our attention to City Council land at Annesbrook previously used for the abattoir and now designated industrial land. The view was expressed that this large area of relatively flat land would make an ideal site for a sporting centre, with the sportsdrome the hub. Such a scheme has much to commend it. The site is reasonably handy to both Stoke and Nelson sporting organisations; it is not in the centre of a thickly populated area; there would be ample parking space available and its conversion into playing fields would not be difficult. On the debit side, however, is the fact that the land is extremely valuable for industrial sites - too valuable, probably, for it to be used for recreational purposes. It would appear that the site for the sportsdrome is to be the No 2 Trafalgar Park ground, and that this playing area, to be lost to rugby, will be compensated for when the new playing areas opposite the Auckland Point School (now a council holding yard) are cleared and set out.
