The new rubbish collection system came into force at the beginning of this month, and, according to City Council engineer, Mr Geoff Toynbee, the change-over from tins to bags had been accomplished smoothly and with few problems. This is, of course, the council view. The householder, on the whole, is quite happy about the situation. Many are unhappy that expensive dustbins are now obsolete, and others regret that the council charges for the service are now higher, but by and large there are few criticisms from the householder. The business section is another matter. Business houses are on the same footing as householders and to dispose of the surplus rubbish of the week many are having to do the cartage themselves or pay for it to be done. Some business houses on Trafalgar Street, paying more than £500 rates a year, feel that the council could be a little more magnanimous and retain the old service given. We agree with them. This aspect of the system warrants a closer investigation.

A few dustbins were pat out with the bags on the first day of the collections (the bins were accepted but householders were advised that they would not be accepted a second time).

After the collection, no bags, only a few bins.

The saving to the council In time, plant maintenance and labour should be tremendous - so much so that it could well afford to give the business community a service.
