Roll along, covered wagon

John and Valerie Madsen are reactionaries. Not for them the rush and tear of motorised transport, the fleeting glimpses of beauty spots and the travel sickness. This year the Madsen family went by horse-drawn wagon on their vacation to Golden Bay. And they're convinced that this is the way to travel. Their 200-mile journey was, however, fraught with perils - photographers. At times the wagon made little or no progress as cars screamed to a halt to get a pictorial record of this old mode of travel. And it was a fairly cheap holiday. No petrol to buy. And old Barney, from the O'Connor farm at Appleby, averaged two miles to a square yard of grass - and that was free.
