Festival Games Drew Big Crowd

A biting northerly wind failed to "deter a large crowd from attending the festival games at Trafalgar Park, organised by the Nelson Athletic and Cycling Club. Major draws on the programme were the Jamaican Empire Games gold medallist, Roy Williams, and the two top class Italian cyclists, Luigi Roncaglia and Giordano Turrini. Roy Williams, New Zealand Sportsman of the Year, delighted the crowd with his pentathlon win. He scored 3431 pts, and fellow Aucklander, Dave Norris, national long Jump champion, was second with 3356 pts, and Murray Walls, Canterbury, was third with 3184. The race of the night, however, was the 3-mile cycling event. Roncaglia dropped out of the race with a flat tyre, leaving fellow countryman Turrini still in the race. With about 300 yards to go, Turrini produced a burst of speed which flattened the field and took him to victory.
