First bride and groom of the new century at Cromwell were Robert and Emily Burdon, now in Nelson. The wedding, between Emily Merrin, second daughter of Mrs and the late Mr D. P. Cowie, Cromwell, and Robert, eldest son of Mr and Mrs R. H. Burdon, 35 Iwa Road, Nelson, took place at the close of the Cromwell borough centenary celebrations. A single-horse phaeton was used for transport. Emily is teaching at Hampden Street School, and Robert at Auckland Point School.
