Children maintain their own forest

Every year just before the commencement of the second term holidays, children from primary and intermediate schools in the Nelson and Waimea school districts are taken to the top of Spooner's Range to enlarge the children's own forest, the Coronation Forest. Commenced 12 years ago, the area planted by the children is about 175 acres. This year, many of the young trees planted years ago were pruned by them.
