This year's Mardi Gras organised by Nelson Jaycee had a Jolly Roger theme, and while the evening, on the whole, was a complete success, disappointment was expressed at the comparatively small number of participants who dressed for the occasion. The big fancy dress prize for the group effort was won by the piratical crew below, a Tahunanui Surf Club effort. Bands and other forms of entertainment kept the huge crowd in Trafalgar Street entertained throughout the evening, and others found their entertainment in answering the cries of the side-show pirates to "have a go".
