National Junior Boxing Championships

Boxing in Nelson until quite recently was at a very low ebb, but the enthusiasm of a small band of men headed by Mr Tony Gray revived interest in the sport – so much so, in fact, that the National Boxing Council had enough confidence in the local association to choose Nelson as the venue for the national junior championships. Nor was their confidence misplaced. Nelson officials and supporters worked extremely hard and efficiently to make this first major venture an outstanding success. In the ring Nelson did not fare very well, only one title coming to the province. This was won by Terry Hunter who is seen in action against his Southland opponent, R. Smith, in the finals, and in his moment of triumph (right) as he was acclaimed winner.
