Trafalgar Street Changes

Walking down Trafalgar Street recently we were struck by the extensive alterations which have taken place there in the last five years. As well as a new City Council building and Post Office Savings Bank building, there have been many premises modernised or renovated. These alterations, plus the disappearance of those unsightly overhead wires, have given Trafalgar Street quite a facelift.

The G. M. Rout building (home of "Photo News" in Nelson, incidentally) is undergoing major structural alterations. The building is owned by, and will later be used by, the Nelson Savings Bank.

Once occupied by a tobacconist and sports dealers, this shop has been modernised and is now a footwear store.

Even the old Post Office received a coat of paint recently (at least, the front of it did), brightening what was otherwise a shabby-looking exterior.

The State Theatre has had its exterior modernised. In these alterations the sweet stall was walled in and can now only be reached through the foyer. The interior has also been extensively re-decorated and altered.

Where once there was one shop, now there are two. Hounsell's bookshop, upon sale recently, was split down the Middle to make two shops - a bookshop and a tobacconist's shop.

Colliers building on the Trafalgar and Bridge streets intersection, has lost its top-heavy look with the removal of parapets and the modernisation of the exterior.

The Bank of New South Wales has also undergone changes - the building has been renovated and the two pepper trees guarding the main door, removed.
