New Hostel for Girls' College
When Nelson College first opened in 1883 as a private school, its first roll of 68 pupils included 15 boarders. When the new school year opened recently, 121 were in residence - not in the 77-year-old building through which thousands of boarders have worked and slept, but in a new £94,000 hostel. The new hostel, built so that the old building can be demolished to make room for new classrooms, an assembly hall and administrative offices, has every modern facility and is more than a home away from home. The hostel is the most modern in the Dominion and joins the several beautiful buildings that have been erected in Nelson in recent years. This picture shows the new building with the dining room block, which is not included in the £94,000 cost, in the foreground. The new building was officially opened last Saturday.
