National Marching Championships

Nelson, and Trafalgar Park in particular, was a mass of colour one weekend last month when girls from all parts of New Zealand arrived to contest the national marching championships. The magnificent colours and the various styles of uniforms transformed Trafalgar Park into a colour photographer's paradise. Twenty-one teams competed for the coveted title and much of the marching was of an exceptionally high standard. Brigadiers, of Auckland, retained the championship in the face of very strong competition from Blair Athol, Otago, and Lochiel, Wellington, which were placed second and third. Nelson turned on some of its famed sunshine for the meeting and a very big crowd attended the event.

On the night before the championships the girls took charge of the main business area where they stopped motor and pedestrian traffic for their march through the city to the Church Steps where a civic welcome was tendered them by the Mayor (Mr D. N. Strawbridge).
