There were many reports over the holiday period of sharks having been sighted close to Tahunanui Beach and Rabbit Island and even as close as the Fifeshire Rock. This monster, described as a bronze whaler of about 3001bs, was caught by fishermen in the Blind Chennel by Monaco - the second big one to be landed from that area within the last couple of months.

Walter Reed, of Christchurch, stands besides his 17ft yacht, Silhouette, the morning after his rough crossing from Kaiteriteri. He managed to beach the yacht at Tahuna during the severe rain and electrical storm but only managed to get it on the trailer and to shore in the wee hours of the morning.
