Just before Christmas the Nelson Fire Brigade was plagued by a series of fires on the Nelson hillsides. The one above commenced on Atmore Terrace and quickly spread to gorse and tinder-dry grass. Homes were threatened but not damaged. Then fires mysteriously began on the wooded hillside behind Botanical Hill, It is believed these may have been lit by children as a spotter on Fringe Kill saw two or three small boys in the vicinity acting suspiciously. Little damage was done, however. The pic below shows where this fire began and how it spread down the hill.
