The Seddon Shield Returns

Buller, which had wrested the Seddon Shield from Nelson last season, managed to repulse challenges by West Coast, Golden Bay-Motueka and Marlborough, but succumbed to Nelson, the last challenger of the season, at Westport, Nelson had had a season of ups and downs and the selectors had experimented with a number of combinations with mixed results. It would seam, however, that the experiments bore fruit, for Nelson returned triumphant from a match in which only six points were scored. A big crowd turned out at the Church Steps to welcome the team home. Unfortunately, we will have to wait until next season to see a shield match, but this should inspire the players to concentrate on their fitness in the off-season. The new season is not so far away and we can look forward to those challenges.

Three of Nelson's most vociferous supporters at westport, Michael Griffiths, Peter Dornan and John Williscroft, were also on hand with their weird instruments, to ensure the team received a noisy reception home. A little bird told us that this trio are pretty handy painters.

For a short period these youngsters looked after the shield, and who can tell? -one day they might be receiving it for the Nelson Rugby union,
