Slot Car Racing

×

Have a good look at the picture at top. Is there any lack of detail there that would convince you that it was not an aerial photograph of the pits at a big motor racing circuit? Having already seen the picture at left, however, you realise that those pits are only a part of the major, miniature track. But it does give you some indication of the attention to detail that devotees of slot car racing put into their race tracks. The set-up depicted here is the race track of Syd Gay, 16 Arapiki Road, Stoke. He built it all himself. All the miniature racing cars are working machines, but each one varies in speed and handling qualities. Now, what is slot car racing, you ask? Well, each of the Gay family at the head of the track, David, Denis and Syd, holds a switch which, depending upon the amount of depression, controls the speed of the car each is racing. The cars, electrically driven, run in the slots and it takes an experienced hand to keep them there at a good speed. The result is a tremendous amount of fun, for old and young alike.
