Oil!

Oil in Nelson? Not yet, but in the months to come if the exploratory work at present being carried out produces likely prospects, then Nelson could quite easily become another Kapunl.
This picture, of an explosive charge fired in one of 10 pipes sunk to a depth of about 30ft on the Rabbit Island beach, was taken during a seismic survey of the area. The exploration is being undertaken by Lime and Marble Ltd., Mapua, in conjunction with Geosurveys, Australia Ltd. They hold a prospecting licence for about 1000 square miles of the Nelson province, and at present they are concentrating on the Waimea depression, about 400 square miles of the total area under investigation. The Geophysics Division of the D.S.I.R., is collaborating.

The wires in this pic are attached to super sensitive microphones which pick up the shock waves through the strata and relay them to the special truck (at back)

The inside of the truck is a maze of technical equipment, the domain of Roland Jenkins, senior technical officer of the Geophysics Devision, D.S.I.R. Above his right hand is photographic apparatus which records the shock waves in graph form, a strip of which he is studying above.
