Mrs Amelia Friend, an old resident of Nelson, now living in Auckland, who celebrated her 100th birthday two weeks ago. Mrs Friend came to Nelson from England, and can still recall landing at Nelson off the sailing ship, "Michael Angelo" on January 22, 1874. She lived on the land which is now the site of Queen's Gardens. She has 13 grandchildren, 30 great-grandchildren, and 21 great-great-grandchildren.
