Sombre note of the month was struck when an 18-year-old girl, Janet Ada Paterson, 11 Bateup's Road, Richmond, was killed in a motor accident near the Nile Street East bridge. The sports model car in which she and four others were travelling left the road and plunged down a 19-ft bank to the riverbed. Three of the other four passengers were admitted to hospital. One of the occupants, Vincent Orr, was engaged to Miss Paterson. They were to have been married on August 10.
