Smallbore Rifle Champs

The first closed Nelson smallbore rifle championships attracted 63 entries and proved a successful event. Conducted by the local association, the championships were held on the Richmond range. Winners were – Open and Masters: Noel Palmer (Richmond). A grade: Kevin Blomfield (Motueka). B grade: John Vanderwoude (Defence). C and D grades: Adrian Terry (Richmond).

Here's a trio of deadeyes. Noel Palmer, a member of the N.Z. team, was fourth overall in the annual North Island-South Island shoot, with a score of 400.30; Doris Barton gained a place in the S.I. Ladies' team for the first time; and Gary Evans, top scorer in the North-South event with 400.36, is a three-time member and captain of the national team
