Coal For The North Island

×

About 140,000 tons of coal are shipped through the river port at Westport annually. It is estimated that there are 50 million tons of recoverable coal in the Buller fields but it doesn't seem likely that this coal is all going to be exported through Westport. If contracts are won with Japan, coal for export to that country will probably be railed to Lyttelton for shipping. The river mouth port of Westport is not adequate to cope with large vessels. Our photograph shows coal awaiting shipment to the North Island.
