Silver Ploughing Contest Was A Great Success
Ideal weather conditions and a record crowd contributed to an outstanding success for the annual Nelson Atlantic ploughing championship held on D. C. Parkes and Son's property at 88 Valley. The ploughing was a great attraction but so too were the motorcycle scrambles, displays of farm machinery, dog trials, crop dusting and the six-horse team of Mr F. J. O'Connor. The open ploughing title was won by Donald McDowell of Hope from G. Gifford, Blenheim, and Gilbert Russ, Appleby.

Not for Fergus O'Connor of Appleby, the noise of a throbbing tractor engine. He prefers the quiet dependability of a six-horse team with which to do his ploughing. The team proved a popular attraction.
