Fertiliser Plant Opens

Fertiliser to suit local conditions is now readily available to Nelson farmers with the establishment of the Kempthorne Prosser and Co. Ltd. plant in Queen Street, Richmond. The product will be no cheaper but farmers should benefit by having the fertilisers readily available and mixtures as required can be supplied immediately. The plant was officially opened by the Minister of Agriculture, Mr Carter, recently and a large gathering of Nelson businessmen, local body representatives, farmers and members of farming industries inspected the bulk store and plant after the opening. The MP for Buller, Mr W. E. Rowling, replying to the Minister on behalf of the district, said this was the first significant step taken by a major company to recognise the diversity of fertiliser needs for farming and horticulture in the district. He commended the company for its effort.

The store has an initial capacity of 5000 tons and it is stage one of a production complex that will manufacture, blend and despatch a wide range of fertilisers suited to local soil conditions and farm types. The store has 22,000 sq.ft. of storage space, 4, 140 sq.ft. for machinery and offices, and loading bays of another 2, 500 sq.ft.

Bet some sweat went into getting this here. We hear workers would prefer to mine Potassium Chloride rather than Sodium Chloride (salt).
