Beach Racing at Tahunanui

Ashburton driver, Rod McElrea, savoured the sweet taste of revenge on the second day of the Nelson Car Club's beaeh racing championships at Tahunanui. On the first day he was leading in the Nelson provincial championship when the steering wheel came off in his hands after he had hit a bale on the eastern bend (Below). He had to retire and Christchurch supporter of the annual race meeting, Pete Leversedge, took the front and was never seriously challenged for the title. On the second day, however, McElrea drove well to push his Elmac Sprinter into the lead on the final straight and take the New Zealand title ahead of Leversedge. In the big saloon car section, John Wells (Nelson) dominated handicap and scratch races with his new 1704 c.c. Farina Ford.
