Skin Divers' Great Success

Six Nelson Underwater Club members competed with outstanding success at the South Island spearfishing championships at Picton at Labour Weekend. They won six of the 10 trophies at stake. More than 80 divers contested the championships. The six man team Above comprised (back) Dan Castle, Colin Walker and Pat Parsons; front, Garth Irvine, Merilyn Irvine and Frank Hawkins. Dan and Garth won the trophy for the three largest fish of each species, and Garth won the trophy for the most species (champion spear fisherman); Frank and Pat secured the heaviest weight of fish; Colin was the best junior diver and Merilyn was best woman diver (and obviously the best-looking diver of the team, too).
