The Champs!

Overcoming the elements and the obstacles of losing two of their top players (one with an injury, another with appendicitis), the Nelson College of Girls' netball team won the South Island secondary schools' netball championships at Nelson. The tournament drew teams from 43 South Island secondary schools and more than 300 girls played an intensive series of games before the championship was decided. Unfortunately, for the greater part of the tournament, it rained and rained. Other local teams competing were Motueka High School, Sacred Heart College, Nelson, and Waimea College. Waimea College did particularly well, losing by only one goal to the other title finalist, Sacred Heart, Christchurch, in the last of the three games it played on one day.

Clare McKinley sprained her ankle early in the tournament and was unable to play further. Nelson won the final 20-11.
