Church College Played Razzle Dazzle Basketball

Displaying a finesse which would have earned them the envy of many provincial basketball sides in New Zealand, the Church College of New Zealand won the 1970 national secondary schools' basketball title at Nayland College. After narrowly beating Heretaunga College by a cliff-hanging 83-82, Church College in the last game thrashed Nelson College. The two teams to play this last game are shown Bottom.

A note here about the organisation of the tournament. Despite the elements and other crises, there were no apparent; hitches in arrangements. Even on the final day, in torrential rain, arrangements were made after the morning games to have all the uniforms of the finalists dry cleaned and dried for the final. And congratulations to all players on their acceptance of the referees' decisions. Not once in the hours we attended the tournament did we hear a referee's decision questioned (other sports please take note). And the refereeing was top class.
