The death last month of Mr Harold Lowry, Mayor of Richmond, cast a gloom over the borough, for he was widely known and liked by the people he had served for nearly 10 years as councillor and Mayor, His funeral, one of the largest in Richmond for many years was attended by representatives of various local bodies.

Another notable death in the district was that of Mr Tom Hughes, a well-known builder of Nelson and member and former conductor of the Nelson Garrison Band. A massed band led his cortege to the graveside.
