National Cherub Title to Auckland

Auckland yachts filled three of the first four places when the national cherub class championships were sailed at Nelson over Easter. Title winners were Rob Martin and Lindsay Kebble who sailed their yacht, Crescendo, into two first and three second places, to give them a four-race total of 5332 points. Mecca (Napier) filled second place with a first and four thirds (4493 points). We took these pictures during the running of the second race, on Saturday morning. A strong south-westerly created havoc in the bay. One boat, the Nelson yacht of Keith Sadd and Hugh Sim, was holed in a collision and sunk, and several boats suffered damage to gear and hulls. Only nine of the 24 competitors finished the course and the third race, set down for the afternoon, was abandoned and sailed on the Sunday.

The wind was beginning to freshen as yachts left the mark for the second race. Leading out here are Miss Fi Glass (Barry Grossi and Colin Ratcliffe, Nelson), at right, and eventual title winner, Crescendo. In the background, FestinaLente (Christchurch) is having a little trouble.
